Conferencing Honoring Adele Berllin Planned for May

The work of Robert H. Smith Professor of Hebrew Bible Adele Berlin will be the focus of the "Biblical Poetics and Interpretation" conference to be held on May 3, 2009.

Adele BerlinLeading scholars in Jewish and Literary Studies will be coming to the University of Maryland to celebrate the work of Adele Berlin, a professor in the Department of English and the Meyerhoff Center of Jewish Studies. Berlin's highly influential books Biblical Poetry Through Medieval Jewish Eyes (Indiana University Press, 1991), The Dynamics of Biblical Parallelism (Indiana University Press, 1985), and Poetics and Interpretation of Biblical Narrative (Indiana University Press, 1983), will be on center stage for the conference.

Mark Z. Brettler (Brandeis University), Mordechai Cohen (Yeshiva University), Michael Fox (University of Wisconsin), Bernard Levinson (University of Minnesota), Benjamin Somner (Jewish Theological Seminary), and Jeffrey Tigay (University of Pennsylvania) are among the distinguished scholars presenting. Opening remarks will be given by Kent Cartwright, Chair of the English Department, alongside Hayim Lapin, Director of the Meyerhoff Center.

The conference, to be held in the Art-Sociology Building, begins at 9:00AM on Sunday, May 3 and runs until 5:00PM. Attendees are asked to RSVP to dakirsch@umd.edu by April 17, 2009.
