Visiting Scholars from Germany and China Bring New Perspectives to Department

The Department of English is pleased to welcome two distinguished scholars to the University of Maryland for Fall 2008.

Isabell KlaiberDr. Isabell Klaiber is Visiting Associate Professor from the leading German institution, the University of Tübingen. Professor Klaiber is an expert in American literature and is the author of Gender and Genius: The Conception of Art in Nineteenth-Century American Narrative Literature (Wissenschaftlicher Verlag, 2004). She is teaching English 313, American Literature, and English 479Q, Gender and Genius in 19th-Century American Fiction. 

Dan HansongThe Department is also pleased to have Mr. Dan Hansong as a visiting Fulbright scholar in the department for the academic year. Dan is a doctoral candidate at Nanjing University in China. For his doctoral dissertation, he is working on a cross-generic study of the novels and plays of Thornton Wilder. Wilder has a significant reputation in China, and his Our Town is frequently staged there. Dan will be working with Professor Emeritus Jackson Bryer, who has close connections in the Wilder circle and who is just completing an edition of Wilder's letter.
