English Senior Spotlight: Leah Campbell

May 02, 2023 English

Headshot of Leah Campbell

Leah is a double major in English and Spanish.

Why did you decide to become an English major?

I knew I wanted to study English since I was a child. There is a poster from my time in fifth grade in my parents' attic somewhere describing my dream job as "children's book author." That dream has changed some over the years, but my love of writing, reading, and language has remained. I entered UMD as a Psychology major, but quickly switched to English and found my home there.

What is something you read in an English course that impacted your worldview?

Braiding Braiding by Nontsikelelo Mutiti

What skills (professional, creative or other) do you think you’ve gotten from the major?

Through my English courses, I have adopted strong collaboration skills, an openness to the discussion of different ideas and opinions, and comprehensive research abilities.

What is your dream job or career?

My dream job is to work for a publishing company as an editor.

What are you passionate about (or even curious about)?

I am passionate about expanding access to education to marginalized and underrepresented communities.
