Deadline Extended: English Major Video Competition - $100 Prize!

Calling all English majors! The Department is working on new recruitment efforts and wants YOUR help! Show other students what makes English the best major at UMD.

No one can do a better job of highlighting what makes English awesome than our majors. So the department is asking our students to create a short (6-30 second) video that demonstrates why our major is the best. However you choose to demonstrate that is up to you, but because we want as many people as possible to see your work, you’ll want to focus on making your entry as shareable as possible. The winning entry will be announced via email by the end of March, and will be featured on the department’s webpage and Twitter account.

The Rules:

• All submissions must be an email of a download link to the English Undergraduate Studies Office (english@umd.edu) no later than 5pm Friday, March 27^th.  
• Submissions should be themed around the question, “What makes English the best major at UMD?”
• The contest is only open to current UMD English majors.
• Submissions must be accompanied by a completed release form. If you produce the video as part of a team, all team members must submit a release form.
• Contestants are not permitted to share or post their entries publically prior to the announcement of the winning submission. Posting or sharing an entry will result in immediate disqualification.
• The prize is for $100 total; in the event the winning video is created by multiple participants, winners will split the prize evenly.
• Runner-up entries may still be featured by the department at a later date; prize money will only be awarded to the first-place submission.

To Submit Your Entry:

Upload your video to your UMD Box account (box.umd.edu). All UMD students have a Box account that is accessed via your University ID and password. Once you have uploaded your video, click the “share” button to the right of the file name, and copy the link into your email.

Students may use whatever video recording and editing software / apps they choose; however, entries must be submitted in either .wma/v or .mpg/mpeg format. The winning entry will be converted to YouTube and/or Vine by the English Department staff.

You may not share your video publically in any format on any platform prior to the end of competition. Doing so will result in the disqualification of your entry.

The deadline for the competition has been extended until Friday, March 27th. Final submissions must be in by that date.
