Stanley Plumly will be inducted into one of the nation's most prestigious societies in October.
On April 19, the American Academy of Arts & Sciences announced its 230th class of fellows and foreign honorary members. Director of Creative Writing Stanley Plumly was named to this year's class of 229 elite representatives from the fields of arts and humanities, science, social science, public affairs, business, and higher education and the non-profit sector. Plumly has been elected to a class that includes Nobel laureates, Pulitzer and Shaw Prize winners, MacArthur fellows, and Grammy, Tony, and Oscar Award winners. Plumly and Henri Cole were the only poets named to this year's class.
Since 1780, the Academy has been honoring "thinkers and doers from each generation." The members form an independent research center tasked with interdisciplinary study of complex issues and long-term policy research. "The men and women we elect today are true pathbreakers who have made unique contributions to their fields, and to the world," said Academy Chair Louis W. Cabot.
Plumly's achievements and honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, three NEA Fellowships, six Pushcart Prizes, nominations for the National Book Critics Circle Award and the William Carlos Williams Award, the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Award, and the Ingram-Merrill Foundation Award. He has published ten volumes of poetry and is the author of a much-lauded biography of John Keats.
Stanley will be inducted with his class at a ceremony in Boston in October.
