Alexandra Calloway was named a 2016 Stamp Service-Learning Faculty Fellow. The Fellows will meet monthly to learn about incorporating service-learning in classes. They will spend the first part of the year learning what service-learning is and how to apply those principles to our classes, as well as developing a syllabus for Fall 2016 that will incorporate a service-learning component in the class. Mark Fitzgerald was invited to the Louisville Conference on Literature and Culture since 1900, where he read from a selection of poems included in his new manuscript. His poem “Afterglow” will be published this summer in Slipstream. Elizabeth Fixsen’s band The Bumper Stickers appeared at the Second Chance Saloon in Columbia on March 5. Check their Facebook page for upcoming gigs! James Mattson’s personal essay “Guilt” was published in Catapult this month. Joan Mooney published a review of a book on environmental issues in China in Urban Land magazine: http://tinyurl.com/hhul8nh. Jonathan Rick’s article “The 13 Worst Mistakes Everyone Makes When Writing a News Release” was published by PRNewser in February: http://www.adweek.com/prnewser/the-13-worst-mistakes-everyone-makes-when-writing-a-news-release/121520. In December, Caroline Wilkins facilitated a contemplative practice at “Exhale: Meditation, Movement, & Mindfulness.”  Billed as a one day “restorative retreat for the UDC community,” Exhale brought together faculty and staff from all departments for yoga, meditation, drawing, and dance.  Caroline’s session integrated meditation and writing with a focus on “the beautiful.”
