Regina Harrison Awarded Roland H. Bainton Book Prize

Professor Emerita Regina Harrison was awarded the Roland H. Bainton Book Prize for History or Theology for her book, Sin & Confession in Colonial Peru: Spanish-Quechua Penitential Texts, 1560-1650 (University of Texas Press, 2014).

The Roland H. Bainton Book Prize for History or Theology is an annual award granted by the Sixteenth Century Society and Conference to works of exceptional scholarly merit. Harrison's book, "explores how confession was understood, translated, and leveraged in interactions between the Spanish and the Quechua-speaking peoples of the Andes. She draws from a wide range of texts, especially infrequently mined confession manuals, and uses a variety of methods to trace key semantic configurations “both forward and back” in time." Jan Szemiñski in the Hispanic American Historical Review praises Harrison's book for opening, "a new chapter in serious investigation on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century changes in Quechua religion, ethics, and language, to highlight its most important contribution." Join us in congratulating Regina for her achievement!
