Grossman Quoted on Student Entitlement
June 29, 2010
Professor of English Marshall Grossman was quoted in the February 17 New York Times on the problem of grade inflation in higher education.
The New York Times article, "Student Expectations Seen as Causing Grade Disputes," features new research from the University of California, Irvine. The study shows that a third of students believe merely attending lectures and doing required reading warrants a B. The New York Times article offers insight from several professors, including Grossman, on this nation-wide trend.
"Many students come in with the conviction that they've worked hard and deserve a higher mark. Some assert that they have never gotten a grade as low as this before," says Grossman.
