Alexandra Calloway Wins the Malcolm "Skip" Popp Award

The Malcolm “Skip” Popp Award is presented to members of Scouting organizations for extraordinary and distinguished community service.

Senior Lecturer Alexandra Calloway was awarded the Malcolm “Skip” Popp Award. The award is presented to members of Scouting organizations for extraordinary and distinguished community service.

To be eligible for this award, Scouts or Scout Leaders must be affiliated with a Scouting group within the limits of the City of Bowie, and/or a Scouting group for which 50% or more of their youth members are City of Bowie residents. They must also be registered with the Boy Scouts of America or Girl Scouts, USA. Past recipients have demonstrated leadership in Scouting and have made a positive impact on their community and the City and have performed extraordinary and distinguished community service.

This year, the Malcolm "Skip" Popp Award is being presented to Alexandra Calloway for her work in helping the Troop 403 thrive during the pandemic and to help form Troop 403G during this last year. In addition to helping the troops pivot to online meetings, Alexandra created a virtual summer camp when summer camps were canceled. Seventeen Scouts participated and earned a total of 36 merit badges, 11 of which are required to earn Eagle Scout. As the year progressed, Alexandra helped plan and execute safe in-person activities to help keep Scouts active including bike riding and hiking along with Totin' Chip (knife and ax safety program).

In addition to her service to the Scouts, BSA troops, Calloway helped Girl Scout Troop 2044 during the leader's family crisis and in transitioning to online meetings including developing online activities to assist the girls in earning badges for advancement.

This award is only given out to candidates a selection committee finds worthy of upholding the ideals of Mr. Popp's sacrifice. It has been five years since this award was last presented to a nominee.
