The English Department is happy to announce the 2022 Houppert Memorial Shakespeare Competition for the best essay on Shakespeare. To be eligible, papers must have been submitted in English classes since February 2021. This prize was named for Joseph Houppert, a Shakespeare expert and a distinguished member of this department from 1963 to 1979. During his tenure here, Professor Houppert exhibited a great concern for the teaching of undergraduate students. To honor Professor Houppert’s many contributions, his colleagues established this competition to be held in his memory. Thanks to a recent generous donation from the Houppert family, this award now carries a prize of $500 to be awarded annually to the undergraduate who has submitted the best essay. The prize will be applied directly to the winner’s student account.

The deadline for submission is Friday, March 25, 2022. Submit entries to the English Undergraduate Office at english@umd.edu.

The guidelines are as follows:
1. No minimum length; the maximum length is 12 pages. (Most entries are between five and 10 pages).
2. One paper submission per year, per student. Papers must have been submitted in English classes since February 2021.
3. The paper must be typed, double-spaced, and the pages numbered consecutively. The paper must be an un-graded copy.
4. You must include the attached application as your cover sheet. The application cover sheet will be removed before the paper is submitted to the English Department faculty members who will judge the contest.
5. Each page of the text must bear your university ID number. Your name should only appear on the application cover sheet. Do not put your name in the header or footer of the paper.
6. In the unlikely event that no suitable paper is submitted, the $500 prize will not be awarded.
7. Decisions will be made in mid-to-late April. The winner will be notified by e-mail. Be sure to complete the application on the back of this page!
