Joan Mooney is a longtime writer and editor who for many years was senior editor of AutoExec, the magazine of the National Automobile Dealers Association. As a freelancer, she has written about such diverse topics as the resurgence of streetcars for On Common Ground magazine (http://www.realtor.org/articles/streetcars-spurring-urban-development), the suburbanization of poverty for Urban Land (http://urbanland.uli.org/Articles/2013/Sep/MooneySuburbs), recumbent trikes for the AARP Bulletin and water infrastructure and supply for the National Association of Realtors (http://www.realtor.org/publications/water-infrastructure-toolkit). She also edited a manual published by the Nature Conservancy for teachers of environmental studies in urban high schools. 

Ms. Mooney has published dozens of book reviews--mostly of works of fiction--in newspapers including the New York Times, Washington Post, Baltimore Sun and Philadelphia Inquirer, and is the author of Country Adventures in Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia (2nd Edition). She has a B.A. from Vassar College and attended classes at the University of London and the College of Journalism in London. At the University of Maryland, she has taken courses in the Graduate Certificate Program in Multimedia Journalism and the Urban Planning program. She is a member of the National Press Club and the American Society of Journaliasts and Authors.

Ms. Mooney has taught Technical Writing at the University of Maryland since 2010.
