All Writing Center services have been moved online. Appointments can be made on one of our two online schedules: Live Online Tutoring (synchronous) and 24 Hrs. Later Feedback (asynchronous). For questions about how online tutoring works or how to access appointments, please see our page on online tutoring. The Grammar Hotline is suspended until further notice. To reach us, please email writadmin@umd.edu.

During this pandemic, while the University of Maryland is conducting distance learning, the Writing Center will do its best to keep each and every appointment and remain accessible to students throughout each week that classes are in session, but we ask that students please understand that with our tutors all working from home on their own devices, just as students are, we cannot guarantee that technology or internet connectivity will remain reliable at all times. Illness among our staff may also result in missed appointments. While we will do all that we can to address technology and connectivity issues, and to find replacement tutors when necessary, there will undoubtedly be times when our only option will be to cancel sessions, unfortunately.

The Writing Center provides opportunities for UMD’s diverse undergraduate student body to improve their writing, research, and critical thinking skills in preparation for successful academic, professional, and civic lives. In a supportive atmosphere, trained consultants from a variety of backgrounds and majors assist writers in-person and online throughout all stages of the composition process. The Writing Center also facilitates collaborations and workshops on topics related to writing and teaching writing. We are committed to enhancing our student services through research on writing center theory and practice, conference participation, and mentoring undergraduate scholarship.
