January 31 Lecture: What Type of Lamb does Isaiah 53 Describe?

January 25, 2011 English | Center for Literary and Comparative Studies

The Jospeh and Rebecca Meyerhoff Center for Jewish Studies announces a lecture, "What Type of Lamb does Isaiah 53 Describe?" by Jeremy Schipper, on Monday, January 31, 2011, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm in 0142 Holzapfel Hall.

Abstract:

Isaiah 53 compares an unnamed servant figure to a slaughtered lamb. We will examine how other biblical texts involving lambs may help us understand one of the most contested figures in the history of biblical interpretation.

Jeremy Schipper is an Assistant Professor of Religion (Hebrew Bible) and a core member of the Jewish Studies faculty at Temple University in Philadelphia. His research focuses on the Former Prophets (Joshua – 2 Kings) and disability in the Hebrew Bible and other ancient Near Eastern texts.  Currently, he is writing a book titled Disability and Isaiah’s Suffering Servant for Oxford University Press. His previous publications include Parables and Conflict in the Hebrew Bible (Cambridge University Press, 2009) and Disability Studies and the Hebrew Bible: Figuring Mephibosheth in the David Story (T & T Clark, 2006).
