ENGL628E Readings in African American Literature; Exploring Imagined Black Worlds

The invented world—from August Wilson’s Hill District to Randall Kenan’s Tims Creek—in black fiction has served as a bulwark against and a sanctuary from white supremacy. Quiet as it's kept, some of the most important and memorable “characters” in black fiction have been highly imagined settings. In this course we will examine imagined and invented black communities in the works of Toni Morrison, Randall Kenan, August Wilson, Zora Neale Hurston and others.
