Write Night

Student at work

Write Night

English Thursday, October 15, 2020 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Online

Join us for Write Night: Inquiry, a community writing event and opportunity for general questions about the ENGL101 Inquiry assignment.

The Zoom Session will serve as a community writing space where you and other students from English 101 can come together to discuss and work on the drafts of your Inquiry Assignment. Additionally, Writing Center tutors will be there to answer general questions about the assignment itself. If you have specific questions about something you’ve written, you can access the Writing Center online scheduling system to speak one-on-one with a tutor for 10 minutes. (See instructions for accessing the one-on-one discussions below).

Please follow these instructions for accessing the Zoom session:

1. Before October 15th at 6:00pm, pre-register here. You will receive an
email with the Zoom link before the event begins. If you are wanting to join after 6pm, please email writadmin@umd.edu to receive the Zoom link.

2. You may wish to have your camera on or off, whichever you are most comfortable with.

3. If you have a question, please utilize the Zoom chat feature to ask your question so that
questions can be asked and answered in an orderly manner and so that those who wish to
work in a quiet environment can still do so.

4. Feel free to stay for as long or as little as you wish as this is a casual event!

One-on-One Discussion with a Tutor:

The one-on-one discussions with a tutor are designed for specific questions you may have about your particular writing. You will have 10 minutes to talk with a tutor using our scheduling system. There, you will be able to upload your draft and get individualized feedback on what you’ve written.

Please follow these instructions for accessing the one-on-one discussions:

1. Go to https://umd.mywconline.com.

2. Important: If you’ve never utilized this online platform for tutoring before, you must
first register for an account. Please register for an account before October 15 so that if
any issues arise with your account, the administrative staff can help you before the Write
Night event.

3. Log into the scheduling system with your username and password and choose “Write
Night: Inquiry Assignment” from the “Available Schedules” section under the login
information.

4. From there, you will be directed to the schedule that includes the names of available
tutors. Choose an open time slot (they will be grey in color).

5. When entering the session, you should be prompted to enable the camera and
microphone. You must allow this so that you can hear your tutor, but you are welcome to
turn the camera off once you’re able to communicate through audio with your tutor.

6. Please try to keep your appointment within the ten minute slot you’ve chosen.
