Doug Kern and Jess Enoch Receive the John Long Innovative Teaching Award

November 28, 2017 English | Center for Literary and Comparative Studies

Please join us in congratulating Doug Kern and Jess Enoch, the first recipients of the John Long Innovative Teaching Award!  Each award is $1500.

The support of the John Long Innovative Teaching Award will allow Jess Enoch to develop new public outreach opportunities for students in her course "Women and Public Memory in Digital and Material Worlds," a course that encourages students to “analyze and take part in the production of public memory texts dedicated to women in digital and real-world contexts” as a means to “explore how, why, and in what context women are remembered and what these memories persuade us to think and believe.” Working closely with Elizabeth Novara, Historical Manuscripts Curator at the UMD libraries, Jess plans on exploring options for students to contribute to the library’s celebration of the centennial anniversary of women’s suffrage (events will run from 2019-2020).  The broader aim would be to encourage students to identify and leverage UMD archival holdings to create public exhibits and/or events relating not just to women’s suffrage but also to women’s political life since the vote.

The John Long Innovative Teaching Award will provide Doug Kern's students opportunities to showcase original scripts written in his course "Writing to be Seen: Scriptwriting for Theater, Film, and Television."  Doug will develop scriptwriting festivals and related events allowing students “to tell their own stories, learn from others’ stories, and see how stories are made and unmade and to what ends.”  He will work with students in developing presentations for the annual Comparative Drama Conference, which accepts proposals from undergraduate students for staged readings, and on submitting their work to the Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival, whereby 24 semi-finalists each receive a full production in one of New York City’s leading Off Broadway theatres.
