Martha Nell Smith Directs Emily Dickinson International Society Annual Meeting, Among Other News

With Executive Director of the Emily Dickinson Museum Jane Wald, Martha Nell Smith directed the Emily Dickinson International Society (EDIS) Annual Meeting held in Amherst August 7-9 and in partnership with the Museum. “Emily Dickinson in Her Elements” featured hikes on the Emily Dickinson trail, tours of the Amherst College Wilder Observatory, the Beneski Natural History Museum, and Dickinson’s gardens on the Dickinson Grounds, Emily Dickinson Museum, a rollicking program of 19th-century folk music by The Red Skies Music Ensemble, and a Saturday afternoon recital by jazz pianist Tomoko Ozawa playing Martha Dickinson Bianchi's Steinway in the Evergreens. Smith also spoke at the Biographers International Organization Conference June 5-6 at the National Press Club on a “Writing About Writers” panel organized by former UM Dept Chair Deirdre David--http://biographersinternational.org/conference/2015-conference-agenda/.

Extending her collaboration with Baihua Wang of Fudan University, Shanghai, Smith edited sections of three different international journals resulting from the “Dickinson Dwells in China” translation conference last November—International Journal of Poetry and Poetics (Publication of Chinese/American Association for Poetry and Poetics); Chinese Literature and World Literature (Chinese Comparative Literature Association, Peking (Beijing) University); and Cowrie: A Journal of Comparative Literature and Culture (Shanghai Normal University).
