Prerequisite: Two English courses in literature; or permission of ARHU-English department.
Prose, poetry, drama of living American writers. Current cultural and social issues.
We will focus on experimental fiction, poetry, and essays published during the twenty-first century. How have writers responded to new technologies and new media? To political events? To economic crisis? To environmental fears? How have writers pioneered new literary forms or repurposed old forms for new purposes? Writers we might read include Helen DeWitt, Junot Díaz, Tao Lin, Ottessa Moshfegh, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Claudia Rankine, and Ben Lerner.
This course requires an oral presentation, one short paper, one long research paper, and a final exam.
