ENGL648 - Contemporary American Literature

This course will study prominent fiction published since the turn of the millennium. We will discuss the methodological difficulties that arise from studying contemporary fiction, read major scholars studying the contemporary arts, and discuss new professional institutions (organizations, journals, book series) committed to "the contemporary" as a specific object of academic study. We will focus on "autofiction" as a growingly important genre. Authors we might study include Chris Kraus, David Foster Wallace, Sheila Heti, Tao Lin, Claudia Rankine, Teju Cole, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Ben Lerner.
