ENGL310 - Medieval and Renaissance British Literature

A detailed study of selected major Medieval and Renaissance works produced in England, with a focus on recreating the female voice in both male- and female-authored texts. Some of these texts will be in translation from Latin and French; others will be in middle or early modern English. All students should be prepared to read carefully and critically, and to use contextual and secondary material judiciously. The class will cover authors and texts including but not limited to: Marie de France, Margery Kempe, Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra, and Christine de Pizan, as well as poetry by Geoffrey Chaucer, John Lydgate, George Cavendish, Samuel Daniel, Isabella Whitney, Philip and Mary Sidney, Queen Elizabeth I, and others. Assignments will include two 6-8 page papers, four 1-2 page reading responses, an oral presentation, and a final exam.
