Spring 2020 Commencement

May 2020 Commencement Ceremony

Departments of English and Comparative Literature

Date and Time: Thursday, May 21, 2020 at 1:30 p.m.

No tickets are necessary but all graduates must RSVP by May 1, 2020, through a link that will be sent to you by email.

Location: Ritchie Coliseum

Directions and Parking

Due to Purple Line Construction, attendees will unfortunately be unable to park in the Ritchie Coliseum parking lot. Therefore, the university has arranged for a shuttle to run between the Regents Drive Garage and Ritchie Coliseum every 20 minutes from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The pick-up location will be in front of the DOTS (Department of Transportation Services) office. Google Maps will take you directly to the Regents Drive Garage if you type in the address for DOTS, which is 200 Regents Drive, College Park, MD 20742. A downloadable campus parking map can be found at https://transportation.umd.edu/parking/maps/umd-campus-parking-map.

All parking on campus, including metered spaces, will be free on the day of commencement. If you require special transportation assistance on campus, please make arrangements by calling the Office of Special Events at 301.405.4638.

Graduate Assembly

Graduates should arrive between 12:30 and 1:00 p.m. for lineup.  All graduates must check in on the ground floor of Ritchie Coliseum and pick up a namecard to be given to the director of their program during the ceremony prior to lining up.

Regalia is required for both the departmental and University ceremonies. You are responsible for obtaining your own graduation regalia. You may order your graduation regalia and commemorative accessories in the University Book Center, located in the Stamp Student Union, or online at https://umdcollegepark.shopoakhalli.com.

Students who are members of Sigma Tau Delta may purchase honor cords through the Sigma Tau Delta website at http://www.english.org/sigmatd/store/index.shtml.

Special Assistance

If you or your guests will require special assistance (i.e. wheelchair access and seating), please send an e-mail to english@umd.edu specifying your name and the nature of the assistance required.

We ask that you please be considerate of those around you when taking pictures.  For your convenience, GradImages will take a photograph of each graduate participating in the departmental ceremony as they walk across the stage, as well as a posed photo at the end of the stage.  While there is no obligation to purchase these prints, the graduate will receive color proofs by email approximately two weeks after commencement. The prints will also be available to view and purchase online.

Participation Eligibility for Undergraduate Students

English majors who have no more than two courses remaining to take over the summer session in order to graduate may participate in the May departmental commencement ceremony, provided they complete and submit a Request to Participate in English Commencement form to the English Undergraduate Studies Office in 1128 Tawes Hall by no later than May 1, 2020.

Participation Eligibility for Graduate Students

Graduate students who will not officially graduate in May may participate in the departmental commencement ceremony with approval of the Graduate Programs Director.
