December 2020 Commencement Ceremony

Departments of English, Comparative Literature, Women's Studies, American Studies, and Film Studies

No tickets are necessary but all English and Film Studies graduates must RSVP by December 1, 2020, through a link that will be sent to you by email. The ceremony will last approximately 90 minutes.

Directions and Parking

All parking on campus, including metered spaces, will be free on the day of commencement. If you require special transportation assistance on campus, please make arrangements by calling the Office of Special Events at 301.405.4638.

Graduate Assembly

Graduates should arrive between TBA a.m. for lineup. Lineup will take place in The Clarice's Dance Theatre. All graduates must check in and pick up a namecard to be given to the director of their program during the ceremony prior to lining up.


Regalia is required for both the departmental and University ceremonies. You are responsible for obtaining your own graduation regalia. You may order your graduation regalia and commemorative accessories in the University Book Center, located in the Stamp Student Union, or online at https://umdcollegepark.shopoakhalli.com

If you need financial assistance with renting regalia, please visit http://www.crisisfund.umd.edu/gethelp.html to apply for the university's regalia crisis fund.

Students who are members of Sigma Tau Delta may purchase honor cords through the Sigma Tau Delta website at http://www.english.org/sigmatd/store/index.shtml.

Special Assistance

Guests in wheelchairs or who are unable to walk long distances should be dropped off at the front plaza of The Clarice just prior to where Stadium Drive intersects with Valley Drive, as indicated on this map: http://theclarice.umd.edu/sites/default/files/files/Clarice-Smith-Center-Building-Map.pdf.

Once inside Dekelboum, you will find the following seats held for wheelchair accessible seating:

  • Orchestra H 1-7
  • Orchestra Box 2
  • Balcony Box 9
  • Balcony Box 10
  • Balcony Box 14

We ask that you please be considerate of those around you when taking pictures.  For your convenience, GradImages will take a photograph of each graduate participating in the departmental ceremony as they walk across the stage, as well as a posed photo at the end of the stage.  While there is no obligation to purchase these prints, the graduate will receive color proofs by email approximately two weeks after commencement. The prints will also be available to view and purchase online.

Participation Eligibility for Undergraduate Students

English undergraduates who have no more than two courses remaining in order to graduate may participate in the December departmental commencement ceremony, provided they complete and submit a Request to Participate in English Commencement form to the English Undergraduate Studies Office in 1128 Tawes Hall by no later than December 1, 2019.  Students in other majors should speak to their major advisor directly.

Participation Eligibility for Graduate Students

English graduate students who will not officially graduate in December may participate in the departmental commencement ceremony with approval of the Graduate Programs Director.  Graduate students in other programs should speak to their Graduate Programs Director directly.
