UMD English alum Jason Reynolds wins the Carnegie Medal for Look Both Ways

The award is the UK’s most prestigious prize for children’s books. Look Both Ways tackles issues including bullying, homophobia & bereavement.

The UK’s most prestigious prize for children’s books goes to the US ambassador for young people’s literature, while Canadian Sydney Smith takes Kate Greenaway medal for illustration.

Reynolds, a poet and author who is currently the US national ambassador for young people’s literature, was chosen from shortlisted authors including former winner and UMD English alum Elizabeth Acevedo (MFA ’15) to take the prize. The Carnegie is judged by librarians and is the UK’s oldest children’s book award, established in 1936 and won by names from Noel Streatfeild to Terry Pratchett.
