Writing Center Hosts 40th Anniversary Celebration and Conference

April 21, 2015

On Thursday, April 16th, the Department held the Writing Center's 40th Anniversary Celebration and Conference in Tawes Hall.

At the 40th Anniversary Celebration and Conference, scholars, teachers, tutors, and alumni gathered to celebrate the anniversary of the Writing Center and to listen to featured panels and keynote speeches.

The Writing Center was founded forty years ago in a basement with ten graduate students and Bob Coogan as the Center's pioneer. Since then, it has grown exponentially, providing opportunities for undergraduate students to improve their writing and thinking skills in their academic work, as well as in preparation for their respective careers.

Dr. Leigh Ryan, director of the Writing Center, began the Celebration and Conference with opening remarks that praised the Center's tutors. Ryan said the tutors are the Writing Center. She also noted that the Writing Center's tutors work with students and not text.

Throughout the day, attendees tweeted about the event using the hashtag #UMDWritingCenter. The day's proceedings are archived here, thanks to graduate student Ruth Osorio.
