"Writing for Change" Recognized for Impact on High School Students

April 16, 2014 English

Heather Lindenman's ENGL 292/388C was recognized in the Capital News ServiceĀ  as well as other news outlets for the course's efforts to build confidence and promote college as an option for high school students.

This course, a collaboration between University of Maryland and Northwestern High School, brings together college and high school students in a community building effort that is different from the usual tutoring relationship. Instead, these two groups of students develop a project adressing social issues together, where high school students and their college "buddies" each contribute to the final presentation. This semester the students have focused on bullying within schools and will present their skits, spoken word poems, videos, and dances at Catching Stones, a free event open to the public.
