Short Documentary Film “Deserted” Screening by PWP instructors, Eric Thiel and Martha Thomas

October 9, 2019

The film "Deserted" exposes the sparse and unhealthy food choices in an economically disadvantaged Baltimore City neighborhood and the lifelong consequences this has on its residents. It also looks at innovative approaches to addressing food deserts, including a startup “social supermarket” in Baltimore.

"Deserted" film screening and Q&A session will be held on October 16 at 7pm in the Ulrich Auditorium, Tawes Hall.  Click here to view the trailer:

Filmmaker Emily Stubb will introduce the film, which premiered at the 2019 Baltimore Film Festival, and take questions after. “Deserted” is a great opportunity for students to learn about the dire need for entrepreneurial approaches to nagging social problems.

This screening was organized by UMD Professional Writing Program lecturers Martha Thomas (Writing about Food) and Eric Thiel (Writing for Social Entrepreneurs) with support from a Beyond the Classroom Grant.
