Update from Leigh Ryan

May 21, 2018

On March 15 in Annapolis, Emily Saunders Plummer (1815-1876) was posthumously inducted into the Maryland Women’s Hall of Fame 2018 with Yumi Hogan, Maryland’s First Lady, and other dignitaries in attendance. Leigh Ryan has researched Plummer’s life as an enslaved woman. She nominated Plummer and spoke at the induction. Leigh was interviewed for Comcast Newsmakers, presented a talk “’To do right and overcome’: The Plummer Family in Slavery and Freedom” at the Maryland State Archives on March 28, and has several other presentations scheduled throughout the state. Leigh also worked with Riversdale House Museum staff to mount a Black History Month exhibit on Plummer family escapes and the family’s life after freedom. During Black History Month, she also planned and conducted tours based on workers at this historic plantation.

On March 27, Leigh Ryan presented “Archival Research: Using the Past to Speak to the Present” at the 2018 HBCUs and Composition Conference at Howard University.
