The Department of English in the University of Maryland system serves a large and diverse student body of approximately 250 graduate students. Our PhD program provides specialized training in literary, cultural, and language studies for students who plan to teach at universities and colleges; our MA program provides broader training in literature, language, and theory for a mix of students, ranging from teachers in the Baltimore/Washington area, who are well served by the terminal MA, to aspiring scholars who regard the MA as a step towards the PhD. The MFA program offers concentrations in poetry and fiction writing, and opportunities in creative nonfiction, screen writing, and play writing. The MFA program is closely tied to the MA and PhD programs; MFA students take several literature courses in the MA program, and MFA writing workshops are open to talented MA and PhD students. For descriptions of the different programs, see the appropriate sections below. |
