English 101 is an introduction to academic writing. Academic writing is different from the writing you probably did in high school. It involves a critical approach to issues, considers audience, and uses research not just to report ideas but to engage in a larger conversation about issues. English 101 is a writing course based on the assumptions that writing is a skill and that any skill can be improved through guided practice.

The English 101 curriculum is based on rhetorical theory. When we as Americans hear the word “rhetoric,” we tend to think of manipulation and deception, of empty words and empty promises. But rhetoric doesn’t deserve this bad rap.

Our goal in English 101 is to introduce
students to civic engagement, its definitions, and the possibilities it offers
in their own college careers.
Civic
engagement can take many forms, from individual voluntarism to organizational
involvement to electoral participation.
