Silvana Straw, D.C.'s Original Poetry Slam Champion, performs for the EUA

The English Undergraduate Association is sponsoring a performance by Silvana Straw, DC’s original Poetry Slam Champion on Tuesday, November 9th at 8 p.m. in Tawes Hall, Ulrich Recital Hall.

The Washington City Paper describes Straw as “a one-woman menagerie of growls, purrs, chirps, hisses, barks, and trumpeting roars, unabashedly funny and sexy and angry and lyrical…”

Her recent solo shows include Outerspace at GALA Hispanic Theater and Outerspace: Part II at Clarice Smith Performing Arts C...enter. Her collaborations with other artists include: The Dangerous Border Game and Apocalypse Manana with MacArthur Genius Fellow Guillermo Gomez-Pena.

Straw has performed at venues around the country such as The Nuyorican Poets Café, The Art Institute of Chicago and Galleria de la Raza in San Francisco. Her work has appeared in literary publications such as Gargoyle, The Indiana Review and Short Fuse Anthology. Over the past 25 years, she has been the founder and producer of numerous performance poetry events such as Poetry Bonanza at the Black Cat and the first poetry slams at the Kennedy Center and Smithsonian. She has also served as a coach/instructor for the DC Youth Poetry Slam Team.
