Welcome from the Chair

cartwrightheadshotIt is my pleasure to welcome you to the Web site of the Department of English at the University of Maryland.  The English Department offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate curricula in the milieu of a major research institution.  With over 60 tenure-track faculty members, the English Department houses a constellation of programs of unusual range and depth in a remarkably warm and collegial atmosphere.

For both undergraduate and graduate students, the department also hosts a variety of exciting events throughout the year, typically including readings by guest poets and novelists, lectures and panels by visiting scholars, local discussion groups organized around a question or theme, and public play-readings by undergraduates.  In addition, the department boasts a chapter of the national English honor society, Sigma Tau Delta, and a set of active graduate and undergraduate organizations.

Undergraduates can enjoy a rich course of study broadly based in literary history, but with considerable flexibility and the opportunity to pursue concentrations in areas of their special interests.  Undergraduate students regularly engage in their own research projects and can assist faculty in research, as well.  An excellent and selective Honors program offers specialized seminars and one-on-one work with a faculty member on a student’s honors thesis.

Graduate students can choose from an impressive array of seminars or readings courses taught by some of the most distinguished literary scholars in their fields.  As testament to the excellence of this program, the English Department has had notable success in placing its graduates in desirable positions.

I encourage you to visit the many different pages on the Web site and to enjoy the variety and energy of one of the nation’s most distinguished English departments.

Sincerely,
