ENGL 359F LGBT FILM

What is queer time? To answer this question, we will consider such topics as youth, gender non-conformity, race/ethnicity, class, performativity, (ir)responsibility, & the filmic gaze. To explore these topics, we will closely examine EIGHT important works of LGBT film & video: Todd Haynes’s Dottie Gets Spanked (1993); William Friedkin’s The Boys in the Band (1970); Julie Livingston’s Paris Is Burning (1990); Cheryl Dunye’s The Watermelon Woman (1996); Isaac Julien’s Looking for Langston (1989); Kimberly Peirce’s Boys Don’t Cry (1999); Harry Dodge & Silas Howard’s By Hook or By Crook (2001); & John Water’s Pink Flamingos (1972). 

ASSIGNMENTS: 2 short close readings, 1 longer comparative analysis, & vigorous participation in the course’s discussion board.
