ENGL312 - Romantic to Modern British Literature
This course will examine shifting ideas of literature through the Romantic, Victorian, and Modern periods. We will study changes in aesthetic sensibilities and cultural/political contexts from the end of the eighteenth century up through the beginning of the twentieth. Readings will be short (roughly 50 to 100 pages per week) but will require serious attention. Authors will include Wordsworth, Keats, Tennyson, Barrett Browning, Dickens, Wilde, T. S. Eliot, Woolf, and others. The class will be structured around a series of online lectures, followed by student group responses that will take the form of virtual discussions; students will take regular quizzes on the readings, offer weekly one-page response papers, and write two short (3-page) essays, in addition to taking a final exam.
Two lower-level English courses, at least one in literature; or permission of ARHU-English department.
