ENGL222 - American Literature: 1865 to Present

This course will survey American literature since 1865, following key literary movements including Realism, Modernism, and Postmodernism. It will introduce students to a variety of writers including Mark Twain, Charles Chestnutt, William Faulker, Ernest Hemingway, Langston Hughes, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Toni Morrison, Maxine Hong Kingston, Thomas Pynchon, Sherman Alexie, and Jhumpa Lahiri. In addition to gaining an understanding of a variety of American cultural and ethnic groups, students will discuss how texts celebrate and critique specific aspects of American culture. Students will also practice skills in critical close reading.
