This course teaches research and writing beyond the classroom, based in a rhetoric of argument. Students learn to distinguish among types of ideas, including definitions, claims of fact or cause, evaluative critiques, and proposals. Students also learn to accommodate those ideas to various publics, that is, audiences that are not necessarily or immediately receptive to those ideas. The course places equal emphasis on students' analysis of the situations in which they write as experts and on their preparation, through careful research, of persuasive evidence in support of their arguments. Throughout the course, students review and practice principles for presenting ideas in a clear, readable style. Assignments include a variety of individual papers, a series of linked assignments addressing a topic within a student's professional expertise, resumes, and personal statements for professional and graduate school.
60 credits and completion of ENGL101 or equivalent.
