ENGL245 - Film Form and Culture

This course introduces you to the fundamentals of film analysis. You will learn about the construction of film narrative, as well as about formal elements of film, including principles of editing, mise-en-scene, cinematography, and sound. The course also provides an introduction to issues in film studies that include the meaning of film genre, the role of the film star, and the question of authorship in the cinema. The course will focus on narrative feature films from the Classical Hollywood cinema, but it will also pay attention to nonfiction practices as well as alternatives to Hollywood.Also offered as CMLT245. Not open to students who have completed CMLT214 or CMLT245. Credit will be granted for only one of the following: CMLT214, CMLT245, or ENGL245
