ENGL221 - American Literature: Beginning to 1865

A survey of American literature written between the founding of the colonies and the Civil War. Students will read works by such authors as John Smith, Mary Rowlandson, Thomas Jefferson, Washington Irving, Edgar Allan Poe, and others. An important component of the class will be considerations of the assigned readings in light of assorted film adaptations of these stories, including Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, Michael Mann’s Last of the Mohicans, and Disney’s Pocahontas to name a few. Class discussion will focus on close analysis of texts as well as on broad literary, historical, and cultural developments in antebellum America.
