ENGL601 - Literary Research and Critical Contexts


This course will introduce you to the elements of graduate work and explore what it means to get a doctoral degree in the Department of English. Through a variety of readings in literature, theory, and criticism, we will consider established and emerging methodological approaches to English, Comparative Literature, American Studies, and Rhetoric & Composition. By the end of this course, you will understand what it means to do research in and participate in the scholarly community of your chosen field; learn the protocols of academic writing across a range of genres; understand major questions about diversity and inclusion within the profession; have a clear sense of how your individual program of study relates to major milestones in the Ph.D. program—and your career.
