In this class we will look at a range of strategies that writers use to incorporate impossible events and situations into their fictions.What are the rules by which non-realist fictions operate? What makes a ghost story, a marvelous tale or a science fiction novelartistically successful and pleasurable to read? Readings may include works by Donald Barthelme, Grace Paley, Ishmael Reed, Italo Calvino, Aimee Bender, Edith Wharton, Henry James, Stanislaw Lem, Ursula LeGuin, Octavia Butler.
