A seminar on the long poem in which we will make inquiries regarding the rhetorical, figurative, generic, and prosodic character of long or longish poems, with particular attention to the variety of structures poets have discovered over the course of a few hundred years. Readings will include contemporary poems by Ashberry, Bidart, Sterling Brown, Gunn, Heaney, Koethe, McMichael, Koch, Glyn Maxwell, Niedecker, Pinsky, Claudia Rankine, Walcott, Carson, Schnackenberg, Anne Winters, Tom Sleigh, Alan Williamson, and others; historical readings will include poems by Henry King, Spenser, Milton, Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Pope, Keats, Byron, Shelley, Tennyson, Browning, Whitman, Frost, Stevens, D.H. Lawrence, Pound, Eliot, Mina Loy, Langston Hughes, A.D. Hope, Marianne Moore, Auden, Bishop, Lowell, Larkin, Ammons, and others.

 

Assignments: one short paper (3-5 pages), one long poem (at least 125 lines, adhering to formal restrictions), a presentation on one or more poets from the readings. Texts: The Norton Anthology of Poetry (5th ed.); The Collected Poetry and Prose of Wallace Stevens (Library of America); other individual volumes, TBA; and two course readers (one of poems, the other of critical essays).
