ENGL312 - Romantic to Modern British Literature

Detailed study of selected texts from the 19th and 20th centuries, from Romanticism through the Victorian Era and on to Modernism and Post-Modernism. Major writers that may be covered are Keats, Shelley, Tennyson, Browning, Bronte, Dickens, Hardy, the Rossettis (both), A.E. Housman, W.H. Auden, T.S. Eliot, Yeats, Larkin, Betjeman, Louis MacNeice, Waugh, Woolf, Beryl Bainbridge, Pam Gems, Pinter, Stoppard, Hare, and Bennett. Continental writers will be Ibsen, Chekhov, and Proust. Historical, social, literary contexts will be featured, as will be special topics on material culture, architecture, Socialism and Environmentalism in William Morris, and the Pre-raphaelite Brotherhood.

Prerequisites: 

Two lower-level English courses, at least one in literature; or permission of ARHU-English department.
