ENGL628A - Readings in African American Literature; Modernism and Postmodernism

Looking at some of the central texts of the 20th and 21st century, this course examines traditions of African American literary modernism and postmodernism. As part of this examination we must necessarily consider how these texts are historically bound to (and attempt to critique) U.S. themes of racial identity, integration, cultural nationalism, and civil rights, and also how these texts articulate a diasporic, transnational, feminist, queer, and/or international consciousness.
