ENGL499 - Advanced Poetry Workshop
Syllabus:
Section(s):

A workshop in some of the major forms of Anglo poetry: metrical stanzas, the sonnet, heroic couplets, blank verse, and free verse. I will assign subjects for poems, as well as forms. Within formal assignments, students can expect particular technical requirements regarding diction, syntax, and lineation. All poems will be graded; students will have ample opportunities to revise. In addition to writing poems, students will complete exercises in scanning, memorization, and brief explication. Models for imitation and memorization will come from the Norton Anthology of Poetry. This is a rigorous course designed specifically for advanced students; it requires an investment of time and effort, and promises an appealing return: greater knowledge of poetic language and form, and an encounter with the integrities of imagination that only comes from concerted practice.

Repeatable to 9 credits if content differs. Formerly: ENGL497.

Prerequisites:

ENGL353; or permission of ARHU-English department.
