ENGL437 - Contemporary American Literature

This hybrid short-lecture and discussion-based course will explore American literature of the last two decades. We will focus in particular on how fiction represents contemporary suburbia, its residents, and its relationship to traditional mythologies of the American dream. Grades will be based on 3 essays, quizzes, class participation, and a final exam. Reading and writing expectations for the class are rigorous. Students will be asked to read 150-200 pages per week and to revise essays multiple times.
