ENGL310 - Medieval and Renaissance British Literature

This course offers an introduction to the poetry, prose, and dramatic literature of the Middle Ages and Renaissance with an emphasis on the ways that early English writing interfaced with the dominant social, religious, and political beliefs of each period.  Readings will include Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, selections from medieval drama, Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, as well as the poetry of Thomas Wyatt and William Shakespeare and the plays of Christopher Marlowe and John Webster.  While I will offer occasional lectures on background materials, most class time will be devoted to discussion.  In addition to lively participation, you are expected to complete weekly quizzes, several short written assignments, and an in-class group presentation.  There will also be a midterm and comprehensive final exam.

Two lower-level English courses, at least one in literature; or permission of ARHU-English department.
