ENGL305 - Shakespeare and His Contemporaries: An Introduction

We will read approximately ten plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries (Kyd, Marlowe, Jonson, Beaumont, Webster, Middleton). Class meetings will consist mostly of discussions with some brief lectures mixed in. We will probably read The Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, Measure for Measure, Antony and Cleopatra, The Spanish Tragedy, The Jew of Malta, Volpone, The Knight of the Burning Pestle, The Duchess of Malfi, and The Revenger’s Tragedy.  We will do a lot of close reading but also pay attention to the political, economic, and social contexts in which these plays appeared on stage. Students will take a number of in-class reading quizzes, write two papers (there will be mandatory, in-class paper-writing workshops), and sit for a final examination.

Two lower-level English courses, at least one in literature; or permission of ARHU-English department. Must not have completed ENGL403 or ENGL404.
