We will cut a wide swath through 150 years of American literature, with a strong focus on close reading. Selections from Lincoln, Whitman, Dickinson, Jacobs, Twain, Crane, Austin, James, Adams, DuBois, Frost, Hemingway, Eliot, Stevens, Hurston, Fitzgerald, Bishop, Didion, and Morrison. This will be a large lecture course, but it will not be an easy one. Attendance is required and active listening expected. Two papers, pop quizzes, and a final exam.

Credit will be granted for one of the following: ENGL222 or ENGL289Y.
