Description

An in-depth exploration of a number of theoretical discourses that underwrite the study of literature and culture today. Starting with the question of representation in Plato and Aristotle, we will spend time looking at critical writings on formalism, structuralism and post-structuralism, Marxism, psychoanalysis, gender and race studies, and queer theory. Requirements: short papers, mid-term and a final exam.

Prerequisites

Two English courses in literature or permission of the department.
