ENGL437 - Contemporary American Literature

This discussion-based course will explore American literature of the 21st century. We will focus in particular on how fiction represents contemporary suburbia, its residents, and its relation to traditional mythologies of the American dream. The syllabus will include work by Jane Smiley, Patricia Engel, Anne Tyler, H├ęctor Tobar, Stephen Chbosky, and more. Grades will be based on 2 essays, quizzes, class participation, and a final exam. Reading and writing expectations for the class are rigorous.
