Students will read poetry by Wordsworth, Shelley, Browning, Arnold, and Eliot; novels by Austen (Persuasion), Dickens (Bleak House), and Woolf Mrs. Dalloway); plays by Wilde and Shaw; and short fiction by Conrad, Joyce and Lawrence. We will give particular attention to the analysis of narrative modes in fiction and poetry and to understanding the historical, social and literary contexts of the materials. Requirements include a mid-term and final exam, two six-page papers and some shorter writing, and group presentations on a single author made to the class toward the end of the semester.

Prerequisite: two lower-level English courses, at least one in literature; or permission of department
